Celebrate Maple Season—Taste “Truly Local”!

In celebration of the New England spring ritual of maple sugaring, Slow Food Seacoast and Tidewater Waldorf School are partnering to bring you a Localvore Brunch & Heirloom Seed Plant-In on Sunday, April 3, at the Kittery Lions Club in Kittery, Maine.

This region is fortunate to have a strong local foods movement. The abundance of farmers’ markets, both winter and summer—and community support of local agriculture by groups such as Slow Food Seacoast and Seacoast Eat Local—has opened markets for local produce, meats, dairy, seafood, and artisanal food products. “We’re now able to source even our flour locally,” says Alison Magill, Slow Food Seacoast co-leader, because consumer demand for locally grown foods encouraged local farmers to grow grains.

The meal will feature a classic New England breakfast menu*, including

  • Buttermilk pancakes
  • Maple syrup
  • Eggs
  • Sausage
  • Yogurt
  • Apple compote

*All of the ingredients in this “truly local” meal were grown, raised, or produced in New Hampshire, Maine, or Vermont. (Fair-trade coffee and tea also will be served.)

Activities for children and adults will complement the meal:

  • Slow Food is an international grassroots organization with supporters in 150 countries who link “the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment” in response to fast food and “fast life”. Founded in 2006, Slow Food Seacoast is a local chapter of Slow Food USA, a non-profit educational organization that is a full partner and integral element of Slow Food (international).
  • Tidewater Waldorf School is located in Eliot, Maine. One goal of Waldorf education is to cultivate an awareness of nature and responsibility for the environment. Farming and gardening experiences help children develop an appreciation of the connection between the planet and the work of the farmer in nurturing, cultivating, and protecting each of the kingdoms of nature. In third grade, students spend a week on a farm helping with the day-to-day chores of the farmer.
  • The preservation of native plant varieties is a Slow Food initiative. In the United States,  Slow Food USA’s mission is coordinated by the Renewing America’s Food Traditions (RAFT) Alliance.
  • Seacoast Eat Local works to connect consumers with sources of locally grown and locally made foods. Seacoast Eat Local hosts several winter farmers’ markets, coproduces the annual Seacoast Harvest local food resource guide, and works to gather and share sources of local food.
