The Portland Convivium sends word of two great events coming up in the next month or so. Their Fiddlefest is an inspiring example of a joyful and fun community event and successful fundraiser - hope some of you can go!

Fiddlefest! Slow Food Portland’s wonderful event featuring fiddlehead ferns, fiddle players, and foods of Maine. Fiddlefest 2007 will be bigger and better than ever, with more springtime foods, more chefs and vendors, more music, and less rain. We’ll sprawl outside this year under the bright blue skies on the lawn overlooking Casco Bay.

Where: Southern Maine Community College Dining Hall, South Portland
When: Sunday, May 20, 2007, from 2-5 pm
What: tastings of springtime foods presented by many of Portland’s finest chefs and specialty food producers, with a cash bar (beer and wine), live music, and abundant sunshine.

Beekeeping Class: The Buzz about Bees at Wolfe’s Neck Farm, Saturday, May 12th, from 12:00 noon to 3:00pm, Freeport, ME. There is something buzzing in the air at Wolfe’s Neck Farm. Honey bees have arrived to stay on the farm as a part of the Education offerings. The bee crisis and Colony Collapse Disorder have been receiving increasing attention in the media. Bees have been disappearing from hives in alarming numbers. Bees serve a vital role in agriculture as pollinators responsible for over 30% of fruit and plant propagation. There is no practical artificial method to duplicate the work bees do in nature. But there are things humans can do, and to encourage knowledge of beekeeping, Rick Cooper, expert apiarist of Bees-’N-Me in Bowdoinham, is offering a class on honeybees. The class will cover an introduction to bees, bee keeping equipment, and how to keep and maintain a hive. The class is for adults and youths 13 and older, and there is a fee for participation, registration is required. For more information, please contact Wolfe’s Neck Farm at 865-4469 or contact mmitchell@wolfesneckfarm.org
